Pacific Rim (7.12.13)

Sometimes, in order to fight monsters you have to create monsters!

Falling in line with the rest of the 2013 apocalyptic movies, Warner Brothers presents Pacific Rim starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, and Rinko Kikuchi. This science fiction movie depicts life in 2020s as Earth is under attack by enormous monsters called Kaijus. Kaijus, programmed to eliminate human life, are too powerful to stop. Countries join forces to initiate a war against them and create equally large robots called Jaegers to protect the diminishing human population. Military officers and service men are trained as pilots to work the Jaegers during combat.

After several years of the Kaiju War, research analysts and military experts realized that Kaijus are evolving and slowly destroying all Jaegers. In a last attempt to permanently liquidate Kaijus, a special force team under the leadership of Marshall Stacker Pentecost (Elba) uses his remaining four Jaegers to try to save Earth in Hong Kong.

There are a lot of hidden stories in this 132-minute movie that unfold. Star Jaeger Pilot Raleigh Becket (Hunnam), in addition to the war, has his own personal battles as he deals with losing his original co-pilot and younger brother previously in a fight with a Kaiju. Raliegh is constantly reminded of his delicate past every time he pilots a Jaeger.

The Making of Idris Elba
Idris Elba is such a talented man! If this movie gig I have is going to be long lasting I have to stop watching his movies. They are bad for my physique and overall human understanding. On a more serious note, Idris Elba’s character is strong, captivating, and dominant. As one of the only Black characters in the movie, he resembles a young Sidney Poitier. Now, as for the Lil Boosie haircut that he had in the movie, it was horrific but his natural beauty over shadowed the hair malfunction.

3.5 STARS: It was a good movie (there’s no question)! But it was extremely long and I don’t know if it was the 3D/IMAX experience but at times you didn’t know who was fighting who. The graphics just weren’t as crisp and detailed as I would have expected. If you’re a sci-fi and/or Transformers junkie, then Pacific Rim is right up your alley.
