Fences Passes

fences

Now working as a garbage collector in 1950s Pittsburgh, a former baseball star (Denzel Washington) creates tension in his family when he squashes his son’s (Jovan Adepo) dream of playing college football in Fences.

Movie Scene Queen is screening FENCES this Monday, December 19 at 7:30pm in the Waterfront.  Please comment below with your favorite August Wilson play or work.  In 2008, I was taking News II at Duquesne and I created an entire package on August Wilson’s childhood home.  I was outraged that although his house was declared a historic landmark, the marker was laying in the middle of the street.  I worked with City Council and PHLF to get the sign put back in its proper place.  I can keep going on and on, but August Wilson plays are timeless and really grips the reality of Black Pittsburgh (even now).

Hidden Figures Passes

HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world.  The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

Movie Scene Queen will be holding a screening of HIDDEN FIGURES Tuesday, November 22 at 5 PM at AMC Waterfront 22.  Please comment below with your favorite Taraji P. Henson moment.  There’s something about Taraji!  From Baby Boy (2001) to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) to Fox’s Empire,  I just love the roles she plays and the energy she uses to portray them.

Florence Foster Jenkins Passes

Set in 1940s New York, Florence Foster Jenkins is the true story of the legendary New York heiress and socialite (Meryl Streep) who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great singer. The voice she heard in her head was beautiful, but to everyone else it was hilariously awful. Her “husband” and manager, St. Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant), an aristocratic English actor, was determined to protect his beloved Florence from the truth. But when Florence decided to give a public concert at Carnegie Hall, St. Clair knew he faced his greatest challenge.

In theaters August 12, Florence Foster Jenkins will be screening at AMC Waterfront 22 on Monday, August 8 at 7:30pm.  Please comment below with your favorite Meryl Streep or Hugh Grant moments.  Basically any movie that includes Hugh Grant and love is a film I want to see.  I enjoyed Notting Hill (1999), Love Actually (2003), and Nine Months (1995).

The Infiltrator Passes

Movie Scene Queen invites you to an advance screening of THE INFILTRATOR…

The Infiltrator

Starring Bryan Cranston, Diane Kruger, John Leguizamo, and Benjamin Bratt, a U.S. Customs official (Cranston) uncovers a money laundering scheme involving Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.  The screening will occur at 7:30pm on Monday, July 11th at the South Side Works theater.  Please comment below with your favorite “drug” movie.  I’m always intrigued and interested in movies involving drugs (don’t ask), but one of my favorites is Paid In Full (2002).

Hail, Caesar!

Would you be interested in seeing the Coen Brothers’ new film, HAIL, CAESAR!?  Well, here’s your opportunity…

A Hollywood fixer (Josh Brolin) springs into action when a movie star (George Clooney) gets kidnapped and an actress becomes pregnant.

Hail Caesar

Movie Scene Queen will be hosting a screening on Tuesday, February 2 at the South Side Works Cinema at 7:30PM.  For access to tickets, please comment below with your favorite George Clooney movie.  Although Mr. Clooney is easy on the eyes, I’m not really a huge fan.  If I had to choose, it would be Ocean’s Eleven (2001).

Our Brand Is Crisis Passes

A Bolivian presidential candidate failing badly in the polls enlists the firepower of an elite American management team, led by the deeply damaged but still brilliant strategist “Calamity” Jane Bodine (Bullock). In self-imposed retirement following a scandal that earned her nickname and rocked her to her core, Jane is coaxed back into the game for the chance to beat her professional nemesis, the loathsome Pat Candy (Thornton), now coaching the opposition.

Warner Brothers Pictures and Movie Scene Queen will host a special screening of Our Brand is Crisis beginning at 7:30 PM on Monday, Oct. 26 at AMC Waterfront.22.  Please comment below with your favorite Sandra Bullock moment.  Although I thoroughly enjoyed The Blind Side (2009), the funnier side of Sandra Bullock is always more enjoyable– Miss Congeniality (2000) and Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous (2005).

Please comment below with your favorite moment of any cast member.  You have a few people to choose from- – David Oyelowo, Kate Mara, Jessica Oyelowo, and Michael K. Williams.  I love…I repeat…I love Michael K. Williams.  He’ll have the smallest roles in a movie or TV show.  But, to me, it’ll be the most important character.  HBO series The Wire was the best HBO TV show behind The Sopranos.  Williams, who played the thugged out drug thief, Omar, was a certified gangster.  And he was a master whistler.  What gangster you know whistles after stealing your whole stash?  🙂
