Getaway is Taken meets Fast & Furious in this Warner Brothers action-packed thriller about a former racecar driver’s attempt to reclaim his kidnapped wife.

Dispatched by a foreign voice (Jon Voight), Brent Magna (Ethan Hawke) has to pass every driving test and obstacle if he every wants to see his wife again. Brent must use a stolen charcoal-gray Shelby Mustang Super Snake to complete every task. Little does he know, the special edition Ford sports car belongs to a bratty bank heir (Selena Gomez). (Spoiler Alert: We never find out her name!) The awkward pair tears up the streets of Sofia, Bulgaria as they chase down the kidnapper, flee and elude from local law enforcement, and hack various computer systems.

Similar to other recent movie releases like Closed Circuit, there is the belief that Big Brother is watching everyone through secret surveillance. In the movie, many shots are switched to surveillance camera view giving the illusion that everyone is always being watched. Is this fictitious or is Big Brother really watching us?

By the end of the movie, Selena Gomez’s abstract, raspy voice almost makes any moviegoer cringe. Gomez’s delivery is as maddening as her tone. Her gun toting, slick-talking character was not believable. The Disney Channel star fails at making us think she’s ready to move on from her immature, kid-friendly roles. Undoubtedly, she is still as cute as a button but she has yet to break out in a real adult role.

The movie is quite bizarre and left the audience with some unrealistic moments like the idea of driving around for an entire day with no gas, food, or water. The twists and turns are obvious and the plot is a bit cliché. The only thing that saves this movie from rotten tomato land is the quick, gritty high speed chases sprinkled throughout the movie.

2 STARS: “Get-a-way” is an understatement. Unlike Training Day and Hotel Transylvania, Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez fans are in for a rude awakening this time. You can wait until this movie hits the Wal Mart $5 DVD bin but if you must go, it’s in theatres now.
