The Longest Ride Passes

20th Century Fox and Movie Scene Queen are hosting a screening of The Longest Ride tomorrow night in the Waterfront.

This drama, which is based off the same titled novel, centers on the star-crossed love affair between Luke, a former champion bull rider looking to make a comeback, and Sophia, a college student who is about to embark upon her dream job in New York City’s art world. As conflicting paths and ideals test their relationship, Sophia and Luke make an unexpected and fateful connection with Ira, whose memories of his own decades-long romance with his beloved wife deeply inspire the young couple. Spanning generations and two intertwining love stories, this film explores the challenges and infinite rewards of enduring love.

Insurgent Passes

Fifty Shades of Grey

The number one movie in America is none other than the sexual escapades of Christian Grey in, Fifty Shades of Grey. The movie’s debut was monumental as it doubled its budget this Valentine’s Day weekend, earning an estimated $85 million.

E.L James’ best selling novel proactively comes to life in the movie’s adaption. Dakota Johnson and Jaime Dornan star as the world’s hottest fictional couple, Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. Life gets a little complicated when Anastasia has to decide if she’s willing to submit.

Starring as Mr. Grey, Dornan is immensely “dominant” the entire film. Even with early talks of other candidates to portray Christian Grey, Dornan has proven to be fully enamored into the character who is adored by many.

Fifty Shades of Grey is the first of a movie trilogy and it is important for Dornan to hit the ground running. Even with one little mistake, book nerds all over the world would have dissected the credibility of the movie. But, he effortlessly keeps his end of the bargain.

The movie was intense- no, like intense, intense. And you know it is serious when someone says the word twice.

This is definitely not a movie for the sexually awkward. The movie’s overall idea circled around submission– about who or what you are willing to submit to. In a sexual relationship, I personally coined white women as the submissive stereotype, because in reality, it is a trait that can overpower all women.

A few times during the movie, I was thinking to myself, “I wish he would”– simply refusing to perform some of the items requested. But, with more thought, I can recalls times when I submitted to some non-sexual acts far worse.

And after awhile, submission slowly becomes the standard.

Like Christian Grey, men are widely praised as the protectors, bread winners, and patriarch. While women are often times considered the inferior species. But, there’s a thin line between submission and comprise in relation to gender specific roles. Healthy submission comes with non-physical perks. It’s called compromise.

Movie Scene Queen is hosting a special screening of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY on Wednesday, February 11th at 7:30 on the Waterfront. Please comment below with your best or worst Valentine’s Day story. I’ll keep mine brief– But last year I ended up stuck in Atlanta for their “snow” storm. My family and loved ones were out and about in Pittsburgh, while I watched Atlanta literally shut down the city for like 2 inches of snow. UGH!

Gone Girl

Director David Fincher took a huge risk by taking Gillian Flynn’s New York Times Best Seller and creating his own interpretation of ‘Gone Girl’. The risk was agreeably received as Ben Affleck plays main character, Nuck Dunne– a man who becomes the number one suspect after his wife disappears.

In this twist-and-turns thriller, the book literally comes to life and the words jump from the paperback pages to the big screen.

Rosamund Pike is two types of talented crazy to pull off Amy Dunne so well. She was more than fit for this disturbed role. A woman scorned is a familiar scenario, in movies and reality. Man hurts woman. Woman retaliates. It’s simple. But, ‘Gone Girl’ reaches new heights that, even the book, only begins to show how vengeful a woman can be after being hurt.

The new film trend is fictitious books, specifically best sellers, serving as screenplays. ‘Gone Girl’ joins ‘If I Stay’, ‘Divergent’, and ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ as some of this year’s biggest movies and they are all based on best-selling novels. The trend does not stop there. For Valentines’ Day 2015, E. L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey will bring Christian Grey to life.

It is the movie’s sharp wit that ignites the audience’s enjoyment. But, there is one man who lights that same excitement—Tyler Perry.

The Atlanta-based film tycoon dazzlingly plays Nick Dunne’s expensive defense attorney, Tanner Bolt. Tyler Perry Studios, a one-man film company, has created cinematic projects where he stars, writes, produces, and directs in at least one movie a year since 2005.

Similar to ‘Alex Cross’ and ‘Star Trek’, Perry took off his director’s hat and obeyed the commands of another creator’s guidance. Despite his brief stint in the movie, Tanner Bolt is Tyler Perry’s most compelling role. Perry, even though it is not needed, makes a statement that his acting career has relevance in spite of his already established success in the film industry.

On a TP personal note, the 45-year-old is expecting a baby boy with girlfriend and African model Gelila Bekele. Perry spilled the beans at his birthday party last month. Notably, he is calming the homosexual rumors by bringing his relationship details and unborn baby to public light.

Recently, fans have reached out to Perry on his Facebook page to criticize him for having a baby out of wedlock despite his religious devotion. Regardless of rumor and ridicule, Movie Scene Queen wishes Tyler Perry the best as he embarks on fatherhood.

4 Stars: ‘Gone Girl’ is villainous, exceptional, and Tyler Perry’s best work thus far.
